Graduation Standards

 
 
Sumner Memorial High School Graduation Standards and Performance Indicators:
 
 
 
Performance indicators are described as learning objectives are taught and assessed in each learning experience.  Student scores on each performance indicator covered in a course are communicated through report cards (Mastery Progress Reports) on a 1-4 scale.
 
Over time, performance indicator scores serve as a collection of evidence underneath specific graduation standards in a content area.  Students do not need to become proficient in EVERY performance indicator under each graduation standard, but they do need to become proficient on a majority of those performance indicators so that the aggregate (averaged) score is considered "proficient" for the graduation standard they are underneath.  Graduation standards are global concepts and major skills that are measured in all of K-12 within a content area.
 
For example:
Reading Comprehension <------ ELA Graduation Standard
  • Performance Indicator #1 - measured in 9th grade English
  • Performance Indicator #1 - also measured in Government
  • Performance Indicator #2 - measured in 9th grade English
  • Performance Indicator #2 - also measured in 10th grade English
  • Performance Indicator #3 - measured in 11th grade English
  • Performance Indicator #4 - measured in 11th grade English
  • Performance Indicator #4 - also measured in 12th grade English
  • Performance Indicator #4 - also measured in Biology
 
A student's scores on each performance indicator above are tracked over time and become a body of evidence for their Reading Comprehension ability in high school.  Again, each performance indicator score would be aggregated over time to create one score for Reading Comprehension (one score that is rounded to one decimal point).  Let's say that the aggregate score was a 3.2 - the student is good to go for graduation within this graduation standard.  If the aggregate score was a 2.4, the student would not be good to go for graduation and would need to do remediation on one or some of the performance indicators.  The student would need to remediate a variety of PIs under Reading Comprehension until the body of evidence showed an aggregate number of 2.8 or above (a.k.a. "proficient"). Reading Comprehension, and each of the other graduation standards in English Language Arts are all required to be "proficient" over time in order to receive a diploma.  This process works the same way in every content area.
