Dear Students, Parents, & Guardians,
Welcome to another exciting school year at Sumner Memorial High School! For some it will be a return to these halls, and for others it will be the beginning of a journey! This school marks a continued refinement and improvement of our Proficiency-Based Education system - we are leading the state in this endeavor and as such we are incredibly proud of the learning opportunities that have been provided to our students. We would like to welcome Mr. Rick Dube as our new Athletic & Co-Curricular Activities Director - at the time of this mailing Mr. Dube has been hard at work to help coaches and athletes ready themselves for the upcoming season! Mr. Lazo has also taken on a new role of serving in the capacity of a full-time Assistant Principal for Sumner - this is a role he has held for the past two years in addition to being the Athletic Director - now Mr. Lazo will be able to focus his efforts entirely on school culture, daily operations, and an improved academic environment.
Between staff and students, we have roughly 270 people in the building each day that operate much like a very large family. We care about one another, we wish only the best for one another, and we are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that each person has the support they need to be successful. Beyond the halls of Sumner, you as the community serve as an even larger family to the students at Sumner. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you as parents/guardians, community members, and district stakeholders for your support as we continue to explore the best and most engaging ways to help our students learn the skills that will help them to be successful after they leave Sumner.
Over the past several years our staff has put forth great effort to increase our offerings of learning opportunities and programming at Sumner. We encourage every student to get involved with our programs, clubs, teams, and activities. Building a stronger sense of community and togetherness through belonging is a hallmark of student success at Sumner. If you or your students are interested in becoming involved in our athletic and co-curricular programs but have yet to join in, we encourage you to email, call, or visit Mr. Dube at your earliest convenience. It is not too late to join one of our teams or clubs and we are always looking to include more students in our co-curricular programs.
Please check out our Facebook page for daily and weekly updates - especially once we get rolling! We try to showcase as much student work and activity as we can – we want to keep you updated about the goings on at SMHS! Between now and Tuesday, September 4th if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call, email, or stop in at SMHS. We are very excited about the upcoming school year. As always the staff at Sumner is dedicated to best-serving students needs socially, emotionally, and academically.
Yours in Education,
Mr. Lazo, Assistant Principal
Mr. Thurlow, Principal
