We are in the 30th month of implementing an exciting new program- Alternative Pathways. This initiative has allowed several students to earn a high school diploma, when at some point in their educational career, it did not seem possible. For a variety of reasons and circumstances, some students need a path to create a Personal Learning Plan which may include Credit Recovery options, Internships or Work Experience choices, Early College Courses with tutoring support, and a small group setting to aid in Leadership, Life, and Social Skills.
With the support of the SMHS Staff, Administration, AmeriCorps, 4H Extension, and local community support, Alternative Pathways took the lead in building the Sumner Community Garden and Hoop House site. Fresh greens and flowers have been in abundance this Spring, and in the Fall, vegetables for the SMHS cafeteria are anticipated to fill the salad bar. It has become a hands-on Math, Science, and Leadership lab for the Alternative Pathways Program while expanding into the greater community. In addition, this team of students assisted in the rebuilding of the Ella Lewis Hoop House after some harsh winter damage.
We are proud to state that among this year's graduating class, nine were Alternative Pathway students. We are extremely proud of these students and look forward to future Pathways' students' successes.

At times, Alternative Education is misunderstood as being less rigorous than regular educational settings. The MDOE Chapter 127 Section 3.04 and 3.06 may help to clarify some of the confusion. In summary, an alternative education may take place in a variety of venues. However, the same Standards and Learning Results are required for all students receiving a Sumner Memorial High School diploma.
