All students will demonstrate that they have completed a well-rounded schedule of learning experiences throughout their high school career in order to best prepare them for career and/or college. In order to authentically engage with each content area of the Maine System of Learning Results, students must successfully complete, with a course grade of seventy (70), a variety of learning experiences prior to graduation to include at least the following:
-
- English Language Arts - four (4) credits;
- Mathematics - three (3) credits; including courses in/for Algebra 1 and Geometry;
- Social Studies - three (3) credits, including courses in/for US History and Government;
- Science and Technology - three (3) credits;
- Health & Physical Education (PE) - one and one-half (1.5) credits, including one-half (0.5) credit in each subject; another one-half (0.5) PE credit may be awarded for the pre-approved participation in an athletic sport in which a student participates for at least two (2) complete seasons, excluding the spring semester of their final year.
- Visual/Performing Arts - one (1) credit;
- Personal Finance - students may meet this requirement by taking an approved course that meets the personal finance standards.
- All students must also satisfactorily complete a total of forty (40) community service hours.
While most students will satisfy graduation requirements over the course of a four (4) year academic program, students may also satisfy Sumner Memorial High School’s graduation requirements during a period of time that is either accelerated or lengthened, based on their distinct learning needs. Students who wish to accelerate or extend their academic program are expected to develop a plan with assistance from counselors, teachers, and/or administrators that allows them to meet expected standards at the pace and with the support they need. Final approval of the student’s accelerated or lengthened academic program plan rests with the BA or a designee.
